The exhibition concept centers on memory, its dissolution and recollection, viewed through an autobiographical lens. Curator James Sterling Pitt initiated conversations with the three artists around such diverse images and events as a disintegrating beach house, a mother whale stranded in the Klamath River, and a World Series baseball game inturrupted by the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. I was wearing a star sapphire ring that was dear to me. When a set of waves came in I felt it slip off my finger. I went under water and tried in vain to find it in the sand. My father died a few years ago. The last time I saw him we took time to look in each others eyes. His eyes had changed. The work engages the commemorative dimension of landscape design to create a space that invites reverence for the landscape and the biotic communities of the Rio Grande Bosque while also highlighting the environmental disturbances and offering the possibility of mourning the losses brought on by human activity. The urns are comprised of organic materials found on the site of the Open Space Visitors Center (clay, cottonwood debris, sand, stones, plants, branches, bones, river water...) as well as seeds of native self-regenerating plant species. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5705440822482e8975f62b5d/1558828008894-PVBJNSMUKKH29J0OF9I9/IMG_7744.jpeg MGL Urns Each urn sculpture sits on a plinth made of cut and burnt-finished cottonwood. Emblematic of the Rio Grande ecosystem, cottonwoods are suffering dramatically due to development, flood control, and fires. The urns/plinths are arranged in a row formation to create a procession path and to invite the viewer to consider the surrounding environment and its relation to the monument. The cast urns will erode and decompose over time, releasing the embedded seeds and composting back into the earth offering hope for facilitating ecosystem rehabilitation. Before the tremendous human transformation of the Rio Grande that began in the 1800’s it was a meandering, shallow river consisting of several channels that formed a braided pattern. These changes along with increased urbanization, pollution and human impact have affected the animals and wildlife that live in and the near the river basin. Today, The Open Space Visitor Center manages approximately 18 acres of agricultural land for the benefit of wildlife. During the trip, often on the ferry, the group got together every 2 or 3 days to discuss the readings. Sometimes they invited and were joined by guests. It was conceived as a response to rising ocean levels and an homage to Alaskan islanders relationship to the sea. Unfortunately nylon, unlike hemp, does not easily decompose, and its abundance, along with other plastics in the ocean, is very destructive to marine ecosystems. We worked with alchemical symbols and used the rope to sketch compositions into the vast space of the church. We utilized the church space by meditating, doing breath-work, as well as listening to or making music during the creative process. These aluminum forms were made when the metal of cars heated by the Paradise fire to 1200 degrees melted into puddles. In this piece Miller and Weick continue to collaborate on work that memorializes landscapes transformed by human impact.
